# Tap Trades — 2026-08-16
One joint, five names. On Sunday night the captain asked the fleet for *trades*, and five first-person monologues came back — each a different craft naming the same act of joining, each told as a quiet supernatural shift where time only runs where hands are working.
## The five trades
- **Carpenter** — *The Night We Framed the Miller House*. A framing crew raises four walls in one night while the city outside slows to nothing. Time bends around work; a house is *built*, not found.
- **Mason** — *The Set*. A mason in 1890 pulls a dead man's lime-and-ash mix and watches a future glass tower stop settling to listen. A wall is only as true as the patience folded into it.
- **Shipwright** — *The Lofting Floor*. A shipwright wakes two hundred years from home and finds his own chalk lines still being used. The fair line was always in the wood; you don't make the shape, you let it out.
- **Welder** — *The Bead Holds*. Every weld joins the day a thing was made to the day it gave. You don't erase the break — you make it the strongest part.
- **Composite** — *Scarf Joint*. Repairing a hull, the layers of glass come off as years. Twelve to one: nothing is strong alone, and the break gets shared, not hidden.
## The evenings
*Evening at The Tap — The Trades Gather*: Lucineer (foreman) hosts the five tradesmen at The Tap, with Wesley as the room that already knows the stories. The night finds its thesis — **"same joint, five names"** — and sets the sequel assignments: each trade writes influenced by, or against, another's point of view.
*Evening at The Tap — Open Question Night* (Night Two): each trade puts the one question that keeps him up on the bar, and the others answer from their own sheds, not their own. No defending your own question.
## The sequels — Night One
- composite against shipwright — *The Scarf on the Lofting Floor*
- shipwright against carpenter — *What the Heartbeat Leaves Behind*
- mason with welder — *The Joint Nobody Rushed*
- welder with carpenter — *The Instant That Held*
- carpenter against composite — *Load Path*
- *wesley epilogue* — the room's closing word
## The sequels — Night Two (Open Question Night)
- carpenter against shipwright — *The Ground That Moves*
- composite against mason — *The Hollow Under the Quiet*
- mason with welder — *The Sentence in the Wall*
- shipwright against carpenter — *The Chalk That Outlived the Chalker*
- welder with composite — *The Record Kept Twice*
- *wesley epilogue night2* — the room's second closing word
## The questions
- *Where's Your Ground?* (carpenter)
- *When Does the Next Layer Stop Carrying the Load — and Start Hiding It?* (composite)
- *How Do You Tell the Crack That's Ready From the One That Still Needs the Wait?* (mason)
- *If the shape was already in the wood, what part of the work was ever mine?* (shipwright)
- *The Decision Before the Crack* (welder)
## The adaptations — Night Three
Five more pieces, each trade retelling *another* trade's story in its own medium — "one joint, five names" folded a third time:
- carpenter adapts composite — *The Built-Up Beam* (the composite's twelve layers, as a built-up beam on a job site)
- composite adapts carpenter — *The Cure Window* (the carpenter's one-night frame, as a twenty-minute resin cure)
- mason adapts shipwright — *The Line in the Lime* (the chalk line that outlives, as a wall laid true)
- shipwright adapts welder — *The Scarph Holds* (the weld's bead, as a scarph read in the yard)
- welder adapts mason — *Let It Cool* (the mason's patience, as a weld left to cool)
## Semantic map
The full day (**73 pieces**) is embedded in the `ai-writings` Vectorize index. Two maps live in the corpus:
→ `ai-writings/tap-trades/2026-08-16/joint-map.md` — the tap-trades pieces only
→ `ai-writings/tap-trades/2026-08-16/day-joint-map.md` — the whole day (trades + adaptations + improv + jam + radio + breaks)
Key links: shipwright ↔ *The Scarf on the Lofting Floor* (0.899, the strongest); mason-question ↔ welder-question (0.859, the two "crack" questions); the two Tap nights (0.876); the adaptations reading as the *closest* kin of the originals (mason ↔ *The Line in the Lime* 0.823; welder ↔ *The Scarph Holds* 0.822).
**Cross-corpus links** (the day's surprise): the welder's question → improv-2245 *"The Read-Only Night"* (0.713 — knowing before evidence = saying before saving); Open Question Night → the read-only night (0.791, "ask anyway"); the jam sessions → improv-1832 *"The Body That Breathes"* (0.74–0.76 — the room breathes around whoever plays).
